Lawsuit against Amazon: Consumer advocates oppose advertising.

The Federal Association of Consumer Organizations (VZBV) has announced that it will take legal action against the streaming service Amazon Prime Video. This is due to the introduction of a new option for customers where they either have to accept advertising while streaming or receive an ad-free experience for an additional monthly fee of just under three euros. According to consumer advocates, this change represents a significant contractual change that requires user consent. The VZBV therefore first sent a warning to Amazon Digital Germany GmbH and is now planning to take legal action against the unilateral action.

Association boss Ramona Pop emphasized that it is inadmissible to present Prime Video customers with a fait accompli without obtaining their consent. Consumers should have the opportunity to decide for themselves about the use of advertising during streaming, especially in the event of significant changes to the contract terms. The VZBV is committed to maintaining the ad-free option at the agreed price and is critical of Amazon's unilateral decision.

In response to the allegations, Amazon rejected them and emphasized that it had met all legal requirements. The Amazon spokesman explained that Prime Video customers were informed about the changes by email at the beginning of the year in a transparent manner and in accordance with legal requirements. The option of ad-free use for 2.99 euros was also announced. Customers would still have the choice to switch between the different options or terminate their membership. The dispute between the consumer advice center and Amazon illustrates the importance of transparency and consent when making contract changes in digital services.
