Criticism of Shein: Consumer advice center warns online retailers

The Chinese online retailer Shein has long been the subject of criticism from consumer advocates who criticize unacceptable business practices and negative environmental influences. The consumer advice center has therefore warned Shein because the company has repeatedly violated EU regulations. Shein must now submit a cease and desist declaration and make adjustments.

The criticism of Shein relates, among other things, to violations of the EU's Digital Services Act, which prohibits manipulative design on online platforms. For example, complaints were made about pop-up windows that appear when you want to leave the website and questionable content such as voucher offers. Measures against Shein are also planned in France.

Shein was also warned for unclear discount amounts, missing information in reviews and an incomplete legal notice. The consumer advocates also accuse Shein of greenwashing because the company presents parcel shop pickup as environmentally friendly, even though the packages often travel long distances by plane.

VZBV boss Ramona Pop sharply criticizes Shein and emphasizes that the company ignores consumer protection rules. Shein has not yet commented on the warning. Experts and consumer advocates are calling for tougher action against fast fashion manufacturers such as Shein, AliExpress and other low-cost retailers. The stores are accused of deceiving customers with discounts, reviews and designs. The federal government is examining measures against Chinese providers such as Shein and Temu.
