Phishing alert: fraud with fake Amazon emails
Cybercriminals are currently increasingly targeting Amazon customers' online accounts. If an account is breached and payment data is stored in it, the consequences can be devastating. Customers are understandably concerned when they receive notifications of unusual login activity. Criminals send fake emails in the name of Amazon to create uncertainty. The messages warn about suspicious activity and ask recipients to reset their password for security reasons.
The fraudulent actors rely on recipients to quickly visit the fake Amazon website and enter their login details there. Once the crooks have access to the accounts, they can use them for unauthorized purposes. However, there are features in the fake emails that reveal their dubiousness. For example, a personal salutation is often missing, the return address is incorrect, and the warning about unusual activity is atypical. Different fonts in the text are also an indication that it could be a fake message.
In the event of such a fraudulent email, it is advisable to remain calm and check the Amazon account in the usual way. If no signs of suspicious activity are found, the email can be deleted. However, if login details have been revealed, the password should be changed immediately and Amazon customer service contacted. If the account is used improperly, it is important to block the means of payment and contact the bank and the police. It is always important not to open links in emails if the source cannot be verified beyond doubt.
