Price lawsuit against Eon and Hansewerk: Consumer advice center in court
The consumer advice center has taken legal action against the district heating providers Eon and Hansewerk Natur because of supposedly unacceptable price increases. According to the consumer advice center, the price increases of the past few years are ineffective due to price change clauses that do not comply with the legal requirements. These lawsuits aim to secure possible refunds for customers. In particular, it is about drastic price increases, with customers having to bear significantly higher heating costs compared to 2020.
The affected companies, Eon and Hansewerk Natur, rejected the allegations and emphasized that their prices correspond to legal requirements. The pricing is based on transparent basic data from the Federal Statistical Office. Hansewerk Natur attributed the price increases to the high gas prices resulting from the Russian attack against Ukraine and reiterated that lower labor prices are expected for customers from 2024.
The consumer advice center gave an example using Eon prices in Erkrath-Hochdahl, North Rhine-Westphalia, where the labor price rose from 6.18 cents per kilowatt hour in 2020 to 23.24 cents per kilowatt hour in 2022. This led to additional costs totaling 3,500 euros for 2021 and 2022 with an annual consumption of 15,000 kilowatt hours. Customers have the opportunity to join the class action lawsuits by entering the lawsuit register at the Federal Office of Justice so that their claims are not time-barred. The price increases by district heating suppliers have also attracted the attention of the Federal Cartel Office, which is subjecting six providers to abuse proceedings on suspicion of excessive price increases.
