Price increase at Eon: Consumers can join class action lawsuit

The consumer advice center has sued the energy company Eon because district heating prices have risen significantly since 2020. This led to the Federal Association of Consumer Organizations filing a class action lawsuit, which customers can now join. According to the association, many Eon customers currently have to pay significantly more for heating their living spaces compared to 2020. The association considers these price increases to be unlawful in many supply areas and has subsequently filed two class action lawsuits.

The consumer advice center would like to sue for direct refunds for participating consumers because they view the price increases after 2020 as ineffective. An example of this are the additional costs for consumers that E.on incurred between 2020 and 2022 due to price increases. The consumer advice center sees price change clauses in the district heating network that do not meet the legal requirements. In a specific supply area, the gross working price rose from 6.18 cents per kilowatt hour to 23.24 cents, which could mean additional costs for consumers of up to 3,500 euros in 2021 and 2022.

In addition to Eon, the consumer advice center is also suing the energy provider ExtraEnergie GmbH because of massive price increases for gas and electricity customers. These increases are said to be inadmissible because agreed price guarantees were ignored. The association would also like to obtain repayments for affected customers here. It is estimated that more than 100,000 consumers could be affected by the price increases and may join the lawsuit for a possible refund.

The consumer advice center is committed to ensuring that energy providers are not allowed to ask consumers to pay across the board just because purchase prices have increased. Customers now have the opportunity to join the class action lawsuit to seek potential repayment. Pricing for district heating continues to be an alarming issue, as many customers are confronted with high additional payments without always understanding the exact price composition.
