Class action lawsuit against DAZN: price increases illegal
The Federal Association of Consumer Organizations (vzbv) has filed a class action lawsuit against the streaming provider DAZN because it significantly increased prices in 2021 and 2022. This led to more than seven times as many consumers complaining to consumer advice centers about DAZN in 2023 compared to the previous year. Those affected stated that DAZN had unilaterally changed the terms of the contract and made it more difficult to cancel subscriptions.
In recent years, DAZN has caused dissatisfaction among consumers as the sports streaming service increased its prices in 2021 and 2022 in current contracts without customer consent. The vzbv considers the general terms and conditions clauses on which these price increases are based to be unreasonably disadvantageous and the price increases at that time for existing customers to be unlawful. For this reason, the class action lawsuit was filed against DAZN to support consumers in the event of mass torts and to enforce their rights.
The class action lawsuit allows affected individuals, if successful, to receive direct refunds of overpaid fees. DAZN has continuously raised prices since it began operating in Germany in August 2016. Originally, a monthly subscription only cost 9.99 euros, until it was increased to 29.99 euros monthly and 274.99 euros annually on August 1, 2022. The challenged price increase clauses are viewed by the vzbv as unreasonably disadvantageous and non-transparent, which is why they are considered ineffective.
