Class action lawsuit against DAZN: Consumer advocates fight against price increases
In July 2022, DAZN caused discontent among sports fans in Germany when the company announced that it would increase prices for existing contracts from August. The monthly costs rose from 14.99 to 29.99 euros, which practically doubled. An annual subscription suddenly cost 274.99 euros instead of the previous 149.99 euros. The Federal Association of Consumer Organizations (vzbv) saw this as an injustice and filed a class action lawsuit.
The lawsuit refers not only to the price increases from August 2022, but also to the increases from 2021, when the monthly costs rose from 11.99 to 14.99 euros. However, this year's price increases and benefit adjustments were not included in the current class action lawsuit. The vzbv is seeking direct refunds for participating consumers because it considers DAZN's price increase clauses to be unreasonable and non-transparent.
The board of vzbv, Ramona Pop, emphasized that such price increases are not legally permissible without the consent of the users. Therefore, the aim of the lawsuit is to help consumers exercise their rights and obtain refunds. Those affected have the opportunity to register free of charge in the official lawsuit register in order to take part in the class action lawsuit. DAZN has not yet commented publicly on the lawsuit filed.
