Trading prices for electricity and gas have fallen since the end of last year. However, in some areas in Lower Saxony this is not reflected in the prices of basic services. The Lower Saxony Consumer Center therefore advises checking the suppliers' tariffs and considering changing providers. According to energy law expert René Zietlow-zahl, the savings potential when switching can be considerable. Particularly in basic services, consumers sometimes pay more than twice as much as in other areas. This shows that changing provider can be worthwhile in many cases.

The current prices for special contracts are around 8.5 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh) for gas and around 26 cents per kWh for electricity. Based on an average annual consumption, consumers can save significant sums by leaving expensive basic service tariffs. Assuming consumption of 20,000 kilowatt hours of gas per year, over 2,000 euros can be saved per year. Even consumers whose primary provider is in the middle can achieve significant savings.

The Lower Saxony Consumer Center emphasizes that it is important to proceed carefully when changing providers and to check the contract details and the provider in advance. Comparison portals should also be used with caution, as some discount providers have attracted negative attention in the past. The consumer advice center offers a free checklist and tips so that you don't rush into choosing a new provider and make an informed decision.
