Bremen consumer advice center warns of fake calls

The Bremen consumer advice center is warning of a current scam in which fraudsters pose as employees of the institution in order to obtain sensitive data and money. In recent days, an increasing number of people have reported such fake calls in which those called were asked to divulge personal information. The callers use a Bremen telephone number with the area code (0421) 610 XXX XX and appear to already be in possession of data such as addresses and bank details of those affected.

The fraudsters, who speak broken German and quickly hang up when asked, try to use deception to obtain additional data or money. A concrete example shows a case in which a caller asked the person concerned to provide their IBAN under the pretext of removing data from a fake competition. The Bremen consumer advice center responded by filing a criminal complaint with the police. She thanks the attentive consumers who alerted the authorities to this scam.

To protect yourself from such telephone scams, the Bremen consumer advice center recommends staying vigilant and never passing on personal information or bank details to unknown callers. In the event of suspicious behavior, the name of the caller, the date, the time and the telephone number shown should be noted and a criminal complaint should be filed with the police. Nicole Bahn, consumer law consultant at the Bremen consumer advice center, emphasizes that the authority never calls unsolicited or asks for sensitive data such as bank details. It is strongly advised not to allow yourself to be pressured by threats on the phone, not to pass on any data or to transfer money to strangers without thoroughly checking it.
