Consumer advice center warns Shein: EU rules broken

The Chinese online retailer Shein has long been criticized by consumer protection organizations. The company has now been warned by the consumer advice center because it has repeatedly violated EU regulations. The consumer advocates complained that Shein violated the EU's Digital Services Act, which prohibits manipulative design on online platforms.

Among other things, they criticized the use of pop-up windows that appeared when you left the website and offered vouchers. Shein was also warned for unclear discount amounts, missing information in star reviews and an incomplete legal notice. Further allegations related to so-called greenwashing, as Shein claims to be making a contribution to environmental protection through parcel shop collection, even though the transport routes are often environmentally harmful due to aircraft deliveries.

Ramona Pop, head of the consumer advice center, emphasized that Shein was ignoring consumer protection rules and misleading consumers. Despite the warning, Shein has not yet commented on it. Regarding similar practices by other online retailers such as Temu and AliExpress, experts and consumer advocates have called for tougher action. These low-cost sellers are designed to deceive customers with questionable discounts, reviews and designs, which can lead to risks for consumers.
