Consumer advice center is planning a class action lawsuit against Amazon Prime Video

The consumer advice center in Saxony is preparing a class action lawsuit against Amazon Prime Video. The streaming provider gives its customers the choice of either watching advertising while streaming in the future or streaming ad-free for an additional charge of just under three euros per month. Legal expert from the consumer advice center, Michael Hummel, described this introduction as illegal and is planning legal action for all those affected. The Federal Association of Consumer Organizations has also announced that it will take action against this measure.

Before the introduction of ad-supported streaming, Amazon said it would offer films and series with advertising “to a limited extent” from Monday. Consumer advocates see this change as insufficient to be effective. They argue that Amazon must obtain consent from its users as this is a significant contractual change. The federal association has therefore warned Amazon Digital Germany GmbH and has announced a lawsuit against the unilateral action.

Amazon has rejected the allegations and emphasized that it has fulfilled all legal obligations. According to Amazon spokesman Michael Ostermeier, the company acted correctly, as he told the specialist portal “Meedia”. The dispute between the Saxony Consumer Center and Amazon shows the growing importance of the issue of data protection and consumer rights in the digital streaming sector.
