Consumer advice center files class action lawsuit against DAZN
With initially cheap offers, the streaming service DAZN was able to gain a strong customer base. But over time there were drastic price increases. These price adjustments are now causing consequences as DAZN is facing a class action lawsuit.
Since the service launched in Germany in 2016, DAZN has gradually increased its prices. Initially the increases were moderate, until the 2021/22 season, when the monthly price increased to 14.99 euros. But then the price drastically doubled to 29.99 euros per month. In addition, the annual fees were increased from 149.99 euros to 274.99 euros. According to the then Germany boss Thomas de Buhr, these price increases were intended to reflect the increased quality and value of the expanded offering.
Due to a massive increase in complaints about DAZN in 2023 compared to the previous year, the Federal Association of Consumer Organizations (vzbv) has filed a class action lawsuit against the streaming service. The complaints relate to “unacceptable price increases for existing customers in 2021 and 2022”. The board of vzbv, Ramona Pop, describes these price increases as not only annoying for sports fans, but also not legally permissible.
With the opening of the lawsuit registry, consumers have the opportunity to join the class action lawsuit and potentially receive a refund. This legal dispute is just another setback for DAZN, whose once-popularity is now marred by customer decline and dissatisfaction. The current challenges for DAZN are also reflected in the current dispute with the German Football League (DFL) over the TV rights for the 2025/26 season.
