Thuringia Consumer Center: Hundreds of complaints about problems with contract terminations

Together with other consumer advice centers, the Thuringia consumer advice center has been investigating problems with contract terminations for subscription contracts in recent months. Since March 1, 2022, contracts concluded after this date can actually be terminated with one month's notice after the minimum term has expired. Hundreds of consumers in Thuringia have contacted the consumer advice center about such problems. Since the beginning of the year, around 350 complaints have been received, which is roughly the average for previous years.

The investigations examined 828 companies and found violations in one in seven. A total of 85 companies were warned, 50 of which have already given in. Violations were found at a further 31 companies whose legal review has not yet been completed or where legal action is being considered.

According to Dirk Weinsheimer, the legal expert at the Thuringia Consumer Center, consumers can always terminate their contracts with one month's notice after the minimum term has expired, even if they have previously agreed to other general terms and conditions. These terms and conditions are invalid.

The impact of these cancellation issues can be significant for both the market and consumers. Companies that violate the new regulations must expect warnings and possibly legal consequences. This can damage their reputation and lead to financial losses. On the consumer side, the problems with contract cancellations can lead to frustration and uncertainty. Consumers who are unable to cancel their contracts in a timely manner may remain locked into unwanted subscription contracts, resulting in costs and inconvenience.

It remains to be seen how the legal review of the violations at the 31 companies will turn out and whether further legal steps will be taken. The Thuringia consumer advice center and other consumer advice centers continue to work to ensure that contract terminations for subscription contracts are carried out in accordance with the new regulations. This protects the rights of consumers and creates a fair market for everyone involved.
