Whether fiber optic connections, electricity contracts or insurance packages, the door-to-door business is broadly based and the methods are becoming increasingly sophisticated. While some agents are trustworthy, there are also those who take advantage of consumers' inexperience or politeness to close deals quickly. That can be expensive.
“Many door-to-door salespeople are very nice – you don’t even notice whether the actual advice is really useful,” warns Patrick Grabowski. “However, there are clear features that should alarm you.” As a sales expert, he has worked with hundreds of companies and representatives in the fiber optic sector and knows what is going wrong in the industry - and also how it can be done better. In the following article he reveals 5 characteristics by which you can recognize dubious representatives.
1. Aggressive behavior
People should pay particular attention at the front door when it comes to supposed special offers that they should “buy immediately” because the offer is supposedly only available for a short time. If such “bargains” are accompanied by aggressive behavior at the front door, this is a final warning signal.
2. Missing written documents
Reputable companies usually provide written information, such as brochures, contracts or product descriptions. If a seller refuses to provide written information or enter into a contract, potential customers should be cautious.
3. Lack of identification
Another red flag is if the seller cannot properly identify themselves. Reputable representatives often wear name tags and can present company ID to their counterparts without hesitation. Dubious representatives may avoid such means of identification. If you want to be on the safe side, you should not hesitate to request identification.
4. Vague promises
If a representative makes unrealistic or vague promises such as “you will get rich” or “this product will cure all diseases,” one should be skeptical. Reputable sellers usually provide clear information and back up their claims with facts.
5. No time to think
Reputable representatives hand out information material and give the potential customer enough time to decide whether to conclude a contract. However, if door-to-door salespeople attempt to force you to conclude a contract or subscription immediately and exert increasing pressure, extreme caution is advised!
