Violations and warnings: consumer advocates against Temu
The consumer advice center is examining legal action against the Chinese online marketplace Temu due to several violations, as announced by the Federal Association of Consumer Organizations (vzbv) in Berlin. The platform is accused of confusing and defrauding consumers through seemingly arbitrary discounts, dubious reviews and manipulative designs. Ramona Pop, head of vzbv, emphasized the need to protect consumers from such business practices. Whaleco Technology Limited, which is behind the online platform, responded to the warning but did not issue a cease and desist declaration. The consumer advice center is now considering filing a lawsuit against Temu after an internal coordination process.
Temu defends itself against the allegations and emphasizes that CO2 emissions are reduced when goods are delivered to pick-up points. The platform notes that many sellers traditionally supply brick-and-mortar stores and base their recommended prices on these. Temu argues that pickup points provide a more environmentally friendly delivery option. The consumer advice center also criticizes the fact that consumers are put under pressure during the ordering process, which Temu, however, denies. The platform emphasizes that inventory and purchase updates are intended to reflect the real state of inventory to help consumers make informed decisions.
Temu recently caused a stir with discount offers of up to 90 percent and has quickly established itself on the German market. In February, European toy manufacturers criticized the safety of products sold by retailers on the platform and called for stricter controls. Experts and associations are calling for stricter action against Chinese low-cost marketplaces like Temu. The consumer advice center and Temu are in a dispute over business practices and transparency on the platform. Further developments and possible legal steps by the consumer advice center remain to be seen for the time being.
