ADAC warns: High treatment costs on vacation – this is how you protect yourself!

Vacationers traveling to distant countries should beware of high medical treatment costs. The ADAC warns urgently about financial traps abroad, especially in popular holiday destinations such as Egypt, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates. The high cost of medical treatment can quickly put travelers in a costly situation if they are unprepared.

Why international health insurance is important

Statutory health insurance only covers EU countries as well as Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. In countries like Thailand, Egypt or the USA, travelers usually have to cover all costs themselves. To prevent such financial burdens, the ADAC recommends taking out international health insurance that is valid worldwide - except in Germany and the country of residence of the insured person.

Insurance taken out before December 9, 2019 provides benefits for the first 45 days from crossing the border. Newer contracts offer protection for up to 63 days, starting on the day of departure. An insured event occurs in the event of medically necessary treatment abroad. Complications during pregnancy or in the event of death abroad are also covered.

Travelers can rely on ADAC's extensive travel medical information service, which includes over 20,000 doctors in 75 countries. The treatment costs are billed directly via the ADAC, which means that insured persons do not have to make large advance payments. This also minimizes the risk of dubious providers. Additionally, home visits from doctors in many countries can be requested.

The ADAC points out that for hospital stays of more than 63 days, insurance coverage is extended until you are fit for transport. International health insurance also enables the reimbursement of costs for medically necessary pressure chamber treatments and offers the option of deducting the insurance cover from taxes as preventive expenses.
