Anyone applying for a new passport previously had to prepare for several visits to the authorities. But from November 1, 2023, this procedure will be significantly simplified. Previously, citizens had to make an appointment at the office twice - once to apply for the passport and a second time to collect it. But in the future, the second trip to the office should be made easier or completely abolished. From November onwards, a personal signature will no longer be required to confirm receipt of the PIN letter. Instead, all you have to do is agree to a pre-written text stating that you have received the PIN letter. This will allow applicants to use their ID card or...

Anyone applying for a new passport previously had to prepare for several visits to the authorities. But from November 1, 2023, this procedure will be significantly simplified. This will allow applicants to collect their ID card or passport with the online ID card from a document issuing machine. The Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community (BMI) describes the machines as functioning similarly to post offices. The authority informs the applicant that the passport is in a locked compartment and sends a personal code. The applicant confirms receipt of the PIN letter, opens the compartment with the code and can remove his passport. This should be possible around the clock, as T-Online reports.

These innovations are intended to save citizens time and effort as they no longer have to attend additional appointments and administrative procedures.

According to a report by www.merkur.de, there will be further simplifications when applying for a passport from November 2024. The document should then be sent directly to the registration address. However, this service will be subject to a fee and will only be provided at the request of the applicant. In addition, the PIN letter for the online ID card is given directly to the citizen when they apply for the passport. This eliminates the need to send the PIN letter by post.

These innovations are expected to have a positive impact on the market and consumers. Digitizing and simplifying the application process makes it easier for citizens to access their passport and saves time and effort. In particular, the elimination of the second administrative procedure from November 2024 will provide relief. However, the fees for sending the passport directly to the registration address and receiving the PIN letter should be viewed critically, as these can mean additional costs for citizens.

Overall, this development is a further step towards digitalization and efficiency in dealing with authorities. It remains to be seen how the new procedures will be accepted by citizens and whether further simplifications and digitalization will follow.
