Drunk 19-year-old rams house wall: damage remains unpaid!
Road safety remains an important issue in Schleswig-Holstein. A recent incident in Kiel shows the negative consequences of risky driving behavior: A 19-year-old drove drunk and without a driver's license into a house wall. The accident caused significant damage to the living room wall, estimated at between 100,000 and 150,000 euros. Despite a fine of 2,400 euros and a one-year driver's license ban, the settlement of the damage remains unclear because the insurance company insists on confidentiality while the lawyer for the affected family is fighting to cover the costs. How NDR reported that this case has now been closed under criminal law, but the concerns of those affected remain.
In the last few days, the weather situation in Schleswig-Holstein has not been entirely unproblematic. On Tuesday night, the German Weather Service (DWD) warned of an increased risk of slipping due to freezing water and snow grit, which led to a number of traffic accidents, particularly in Kiel and the Plön district. Within a few hours there were a total of 13 accidents, affecting cyclists, scooter riders and pedestrians. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported, but one person was taken to hospital with minor injuries due to a slippery road accident in Schacht-Audorf. KN Online reported further incidents in which passers-by fell in Neumünster and the slippery conditions there also became dangerous.
Wild geese cause problems
Another issue that concerns municipalities is the increasing number of wild geese at bathing lakes. These birds cause pollution on beaches and lawns, which could affect water quality. Municipalities are expressing concern about the potential negative impact on tourism and recreational value in the region. Conservationists also warn against feeding the geese to avoid attracting them NDR reported.
Kiel Week with positive results
This year's Kiel Week, which took place in 2025, was another important event at the resort. With around 3.3 million visitors, the event recorded a decline compared to the previous year (3.5 million). Police reported around 170 crimes, a significant improvement compared to 2024 when there were 216 crimes. Numerous events, such as the windjammer parade, also attracted visitors and the organizers and the city drew positive conclusions. Particularly worth mentioning are the sailing competitions, which were held for the first time on the other side of the Kiel Fjord.
In summary, it can be seen that Schleswig-Holstein is confronted with both security challenges and positive events. The interaction of weather, traffic safety and nature plays a central role in the quality of life and well-being of citizens.
