Cyber insurance in the test: Mixed conclusion from Finanztest
Insurance that is intended to protect against the dangers of cybercrime is becoming increasingly important in a digitalized world. However, a study by Finanztest shows that these policies are not always the best choice. The Federal Office for Information Security warns of growing threats such as identity theft, phishing and sextortion in cyberspace.
Finanztest has analyzed 20 different cyber insurance policies that are intended to offer protection against cybercrime. There were big differences in the benefits: some policies included legal protection, while the damage amounts per case varied between 3,000 and 20,000 euros. Some insurance companies rely on Internet monitoring to detect and combat possible misuse of their customers' personal data.
The price range for cyber insurance is also wide, with annual premiums between 7 and 212 euros. According to Michael Sittig from Finanztest, users can operate safely on the Internet even without cyber insurance, as long as they adhere to certain security rules. This includes data economy, regular updates and using different passwords for different accounts. Still, Sittig emphasizes that the legal protection that some cyber insurance policies offer can be useful. However, he recommends regular legal protection insurance in this area for more comprehensive protection.
