Gap year abroad: Which insurances are really important?
For many young people, a year abroad means an exciting adventure, often for the first time abroad without their parents. Comprehensive insurance is therefore essential in order to be able to start without any worries. An important insurance policy for the year abroad is health insurance, which should also be valid abroad. In the event of serious health problems, it should also cover the costs of possible repatriation.
If you organize a gap year through an agency, it is often possible to take out suitable insurance through them. Otherwise, it is advisable to consult with your health insurance provider about the best options. It is important to note that the coverage period of traditional international travel health insurance is limited and does not cover the entire gap year. Long-term international health insurance is therefore required for stays longer than six weeks.
Furthermore, private liability insurance should be checked. This protects against claims for damages, for example after an accident that you caused yourself. While children are usually insured through their parents, depending on their age or moving into their own apartment, it may be necessary to take out their own liability insurance.
With regard to luggage insurance, the Hamburg consumer advice center recommends not taking out a special policy. Existing household contents insurance often offers protection against robbery for up to three months, but not against theft. In addition, the costs for baggage insurance are often high and reimbursement is only made at the current value, not at the new price.
In addition to insurance, there are other important things that you should take care of before a year abroad, such as your cell phone contract or visa. The Hamburg Consumer Center offers a comprehensive checklist with all relevant points in its consumer tips.
