Gap year insurance: what really matters

A gap year abroad promises an exciting time full of adventure, especially for young people who may be traveling without their parents for the first time. But in order to be able to enjoy this time worry-free, comprehensive insurance is essential. The Hamburg consumer advice center offers an overview of the necessary insurance for a stay abroad.

One of the most important policies that should be taken out for a gap year abroad is adequate health insurance. This must also be valid abroad and, in an emergency, cover the transport costs for a return home. It is particularly important to take out long-term international health insurance if the gap year lasts longer than six weeks, as the coverage period of conventional international travel health insurance is limited.

In addition to health insurance, private liability insurance is also essential. It protects against claims for damages, for example after an accident that you caused yourself. While children are usually insured with their parents, once they reach a certain age it may be necessary to take out their own insurance. Before going abroad, you should therefore check whether insurance coverage also exists abroad.

Baggage insurance is not recommended for a gap year abroad. The costs are often high and the reimbursement is only based on the current value, not the original price. In addition, the insurance conditions often have restrictions. Furthermore, in many cases the luggage is already covered by an existing household contents insurance for up to three months after the theft, but only in the case of robbery, not simple theft.

In addition to taking out the right insurance policies, young adventurers planning a gap year should also keep other organizational matters in mind, such as the cell phone contract or the visa. The Hamburg consumer advice center offers a comprehensive checklist with all the important points in its consumer tips to ensure that nothing stands in the way of a worry-free year abroad.
