Liability insurers are booming: record profits through mergers!
General liability insurance is reflected in the current market report from Insurance Journal as a dynamic sector. Eight of the 50 largest providers in this sector have increased their gross written premiums by at least a third in the last six years. The overall market grew by around a twelfth in the same period, a sign of continued confidence and increasing risk awareness among consumers.
Particularly noteworthy are the Provinzial and Generali, which were identified as the fastest growing providers. These growth trends are largely due to mergers. Over a ten-year period, the increase was around a seventh, which underlines the potential of this insurance industry.
Growth figures at a glance
Revenue from liability insurance amounted to almost 8.56 billion euros in 2023, which corresponds to a growth in premium volume of 3.7 percent compared to the previous year. In 2022, higher growth of 4.2 percent (adjusted) was recorded. Overall, sales increased by 8.5 percent between 2018 and 2023. This modest but consistent growth is positive for 44 of the industry's 50 largest providers, while only 18 providers failed to grow.

Market participants and trends
Provinzial recorded significant growth, which is primarily due to its merger with Westfälische Provinzial Versicherung AG. Generali also benefited from the merger with Aachenmünchener and a comprehensive realignment of the group. In addition to these large providers, Rhion Versicherung AG also showed remarkable growth of more than 50 percent to 43 million euros.
Huk24 AG was able to increase its income by 44 percent to 34 million euros, which corresponds to a continuous positive development. VHV and Condor also recorded notable growth rates of around 40 percent, while Württembergische Versicherung AG and Ergo also achieved growth in the mid-30 percent range.
