Job fears and rental disputes are driving Arag Insurance to record levels!
Düsseldorf-based Arag Insurance recorded remarkable growth in the area of legal protection and was able to increase premium income by 17.5 percent to 1.65 billion euros. The reason for this is the increasing uncertainty among consumers and an increased willingness to conflict among the population. In particular, Germans' job anxiety, which has increased significantly since the outbreak of the pandemic, is leading to more and more people wanting to get insurance. Arag reports that it handled 745,000 legal protection cases in Germany in 2024, which corresponds to an increase of ten percent.
The results also show that workplace arguments have increased by over 16 percent. In tenancy law, Arag noted an eleven percent increase in cases in 2024, with a further increase in legal tenancy disputes by a fifth in the first quarter of 2025. Such developments indicate that consumers increasingly want to enforce their rights against landlords and employers.
Legal protection in tenancy law
Tenants face various challenges, particularly in the area of tenancy law. Tenants can become a member of an interest group for tenants such as the German Tenants' Association (DMB), which usually costs around 100 euros per year. This membership enables tenants to take out legal protection insurance that covers legal costs in the event of disputes with landlords.
Members of tenant associations can also seek advice from association lawyers at the pre-trial stage. Unlike normal legal protection insurance, where the free choice of lawyer also applies at the pre-trial stage, members of the tenants' association only have this right in legal disputes.
New providers on the market
Arag offers rental protection insurance specifically for tenants, which can be taken out retroactively for an existing dispute, which is an advantage for many tenants. In a changing market, new providers such as Mietengel and Conny have also established themselves. While Mietengel offers various membership options, but no real membership in an association, Conny also offers memberships and a debt collection license.
However, both providers have serious deficiencies in their data protection regulations, which should be an important criterion for consumers. Experts also recommend that tenants take out their legal protection insurance or memberships as early as possible, as these usually only apply to future disputes. For many contracts, you can also expect a waiting period of three months.
With these developments behind us, Arag is positioning itself as the world's leading legal protection insurer and is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year. The company remains the largest insurance company that is entirely family-owned and impressively shows how the legal protection market is adapting to new challenges.
