Car insurance: Don't miss the deadline to change

If you want to change your car insurance, you must cancel your contract by November 30th - one month before the contract expires. This is at least true for most insured people, as contracts are often concluded at the beginning of the year.

But as with every rule, there is an exception here too. If you receive mail from your insurer announcing a premium increase after the deadline, you have an extraordinary right of termination. You then have another month to give notice to your insurer.

Warning of disasters via SMS even on older cell phones

In the event of a disaster, major fire or severe weather situation, the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK) wants to inform cell phone users about the dangers via SMS. The potential reach is enormous: 68 million people in Germany own a cell phone. No phone number is required to transmit the message, nor is an app required - cell broadcasting is intended to make this possible. There was a first nationwide test run on December 8, 2022. But not all cell phones received the message; many older devices were not reached.

This is constantly being refined: “Everyone involved in the introduction and operation of Cell Broadcast is continuously working on the further development of Cell Broadcast with the aim of increasing the number of devices capable of receiving,” explains a spokesman for the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief (BBK) when asked by MDR. Next step: By November 23rd, warnings should also be able to be sent via the special broadcast channel 919, which can also be received by older cell phones.

Apply for ID cards and passports more easily

From November 1st, it should be possible to collect newly issued ID cards, passports and electronic residence permits from document issuing machines, thereby saving you another appointment and a trip to the authorities. However, this option will not be available everywhere. You should therefore check beforehand whether the responsible office also offers this and has such machines. If this is the case, it should be sufficient to digitally confirm the PIN letter that is sent to the applicant before it is issued at the machine. This can be done, among other things, by email, at the ATM or by SMS, the Federal Ministry of the Interior explained in response to MDR's query.

“Don’t miss: discount days in stores

In the past, real discounts only existed twice a year: in the summer and winter sales. For decades, retailers emptied their warehouses on two fixed dates a year to make room for new goods. Since 2004, discounts have been allowed all year round - and classic sales are no longer such big savings highlights. Many other discount days have been established: now in November, especially Black Friday (November 24th) and Cyber Monday (November 27th). But Singles Day is also becoming more and more popular. This year it falls on November 11th.

Consumer advocates advise bargain hunters to check in advance how much the suppliers' products cost and whether the price is really cheaper. You should also be careful about fake shops. The dealer's imprint should therefore be checked. The consumer advice center's fake shop finder is also a good address here.

Integrate foreign skilled workers more easily into the labor market

The “Law for the Further Development of Skilled Immigration” is intended to reduce bureaucratic hurdles and thus enable more foreign skilled workers to have access to the labor market in Germany. It comes into force on November 18th. For skilled workers from non-EU countries with a university degree, lower earnings limits apply for the “Blue Card”, which is the basis for accepting the job. In addition, the list of professions for which a Blue Card is actually awarded is being expanded. IT specialists with appropriate practical experience in the job can then get this even without a professional qualification. Qualifications from abroad should be recognized more easily.

As a further means of paving the way for more skilled workers from abroad to get jobs in Germany, the so-called opportunity card is being introduced, which is awarded after fulfilling criteria that are important for the labor market and allows them to look for a job in Germany. Requirement: Living expenses are self-financed and secured.
