AI in the insurance sector: Germans want digital support!

In Germany, interest in artificial intelligence (AI) as support in the insurance industry is growing. Many people find the complex processes surrounding insurance challenging and would like digital assistance. According to a representative survey by the digital association Bitkom, which surveyed 1,003 people aged 16 and over, 47% of those surveyed would like support from AI when filling out insurance applications. This underlines the general trend towards more digitalization in the insurance industry, with interest particularly pronounced among younger generations. Over half of respondents aged 16 to 49 support the use of AI.

The survey shows that 45% of Germans would find it helpful if AI reassessed insurance needs after life events such as marriage or moving situations. In addition, 40% of those surveyed hope to get answers to general questions about insurance coverage through AI. It is clear that AI is seen as a valuable tool in the insurance sector, even though many people still prefer human control when making sensitive decisions.

Generational comparison and skepticism

The age distributions in the survey reveal particularly interesting findings. While 30 to 49 year olds have the highest interest in AI support at 53%, the older generations, especially people over 65, show a more skeptical attitude towards the use of AI in sensitive areas. Only 38% of people over 65 would use the technology to support their insurance decisions. These numbers illustrate the different attitudes towards AI and how trust in data-driven decisions depends on the age group. Accordingly, approval among 50 to 64 year olds is 46%.

Additionally, Lukas Spohr, an expert from Bitkom, highlights the potential of AI to improve customer service in the insurance industry. However, only 25% of respondents want to use an AI that recommends individual rates based on health or fitness data, and only 24% are willing to commission an AI to assess accident damage using photos. This skepticism suggests that while consumers want pragmatic help from AI with bureaucratic tasks, they remain cautious about sensitive decisions.

The results of this survey show that many people in Germany are open to the use of AI in the insurance sector, but with a clear desire for human review in more critical areas. Accepting AI as a tool could help simplify the insurance process and make it more user-friendly. Still, it remains to be seen how trust in AI technologies will evolve, especially given the concerns of many consumers.
