Health insurance contributions: Differences between GKV and PKV

In statutory health insurance, family members are automatically insured under certain conditions, which means that no additional health insurance contributions have to be paid for additional family members. The annual benefit expenses for those with health insurance are not insignificant. In 2022, the service expenditure per insured person amounted to an average of 3,724 euros in statutory health insurance. This is an average value that cannot be exactly transferred to every family insured person, as different benefits are used depending on their state of health.

In comparison, the costs for private comprehensive health insurance amounted to 4,735 euros per insured person over the same period, although significant additional services are also offered by private health insurance companies. Civil servants could be at the forefront of benefit spending because of the aid. The employer, in this case the employer, contributes to the civil servants' medical bills at a rate of 50% to 70%. As a result, the benefit costs for civil servants can be higher. Munich, for example, put the benefit expenditure for 2021 at around 112 million euros, with the average benefit expenditure per person eligible for aid being 5,313 euros.

For family insurance in statutory health insurance, there are clear regulations as to who can be insured as a family member. Children are insured up to the age of 18, provided they are not required to have insurance themselves. For children who are not working, the insurance can last up to the age of 23, while children in training are insured up to the age of 25. The spouse is also insured under family insurance unless he or she has other health insurance. However, there are income limits to consider, as the total monthly income of family members must not exceed certain thresholds.
