Supplementary health insurance: sense or nonsense?

Personal needs and living circumstances play a decisive role when deciding which additional insurance is really necessary. Private supplementary insurance promises additional security in the event of illness, such as choosing an implant instead of a metal bridge or a single room instead of a shared room. However, statutory health insurance (GKV) only covers basic care, which is why many people consider additional insurance.

One of the most important additional insurances is international travel health insurance, which covers treatments and medically necessary repatriation. Even within the EU, additional costs are not fully covered by statutory health insurance. For longer stays abroad of more than eight weeks, special long-term insurance may be required. International travel health insurance coverage is already available at affordable prices of 10 to 20 euros per year.

Another useful additional insurance is daily sickness benefit, which can compensate for loss of income during long periods of illness. This insurance can be particularly advantageous for self-employed people who are not entitled to sick pay from the GKV or employees with income above the contribution assessment limit. The amount of the contributions depends on the desired daily allowance in the event of illness.

Additional insurance such as hospital, dental and supplementary care insurance are not absolutely necessary, but may make sense depending on the individual situation. The supplementary hospital insurance can enable optional services in the hospital, such as treatment by a senior doctor and accommodation in a single or double room. Supplementary dental insurance covers additional costs for high-quality dentures, while supplementary care insurance can cover additional costs for care and medical care. However, it is important to keep the long-term contribution and financial viability in mind.

However, topping up supplementary outpatient insurance, daily hospital allowance insurance or glasses insurance can often be unnecessary and bring little benefit. These insurance policies either have limited reimbursements or cover services that may not be needed. It is helpful to be clear about your actual needs and costs before purchasing insurance.
