Last day of school 2025: Celebrations and the future of learning in Ukraine!
The academic calendar in Ukraine is facing crucial changes in the coming weeks. On May 27, 2025, an important date in the country's education system, schools are on the final countdown to the end of the school year. The last day of school in many regions will take place on May 30, 2025. Major cities such as Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odesa, Cherkasy, Ivano-Frankivsk, Rivne and Ternopil will mark this day with celebrations. However, in the Zhytomyr region there may be postponements, so the celebrations may last until May 31 or even early June.
The Cabinet of Ministries of Ukraine has determined that the academic year can last until June 30, 2025, with the exact dates to be decided by the schools themselves. These decisions are based on a variety of factors, including the amount of teaching materials, the security situation, the needs of the students and the skills of the teachers.
Additional activities and awarding of certificates
After the last day of school, schools intend to use the month of June for a number of additional classes and activities. These include consultations, compensatory classes, creative studios, language clubs and safety lessons in the form of tactical medicine, mine awareness and cyber literacy. Summer camps and excursions are also included in the program.
The times for issuing certificates have already been set. The certificates for basic education (4th grade) will be handed out between June 2nd and 6th. For Year 9, this will take place between June 11th and 14th, while certificates for Year 11 graduates will be distributed between June 18th and 21st, 2025.
Education under challenges
The current developments are part of a gradually recovering education system that is now functioning under martial law for the third year. Since the 2022-2023 school year, the educational process has been severely affected. To support the return to pre-war levels, the government is planning major adjustments for the 2024-2025 school year.
The main recommendations for the coming school year include a start in the first half or mid-August 2024, with exceptions for first-year students. The school year is then scheduled to end in mid-June 2025. It is also planned that Saturdays will be used as full teaching days with a regular schedule. These measures aim to extend the winter holidays to almost three months in response to expected power outages and heating difficulties.
Safety concerns and structural adjustments
Parents and teachers are expressing concern about the health impact of increased workload on children and young people in a war zone, as well as the security situation due to an increased risk of terrorism. Stricter rules apply to areas near the front lines, which is why classes should only take place in shelters or bunkers. In addition, the construction of underground schools in these regions is being promoted, supported by financial grants from various partner countries.
The coming school season will therefore be very different from previous years and the effectiveness of the measures implemented will be assessed in the next few months.
