Marten species in East Westphalia-Lippe: Diversity and threat

A total of eight species of martens are native to Germany, all of which can also be found in the wild in East Westphalia-Lippe. These species include the badger, otter, beech marten, pine marten, polecat, stoat, mouse weasel and the American mink, also known as mink. The American mink has replaced the European mink and was able to establish itself in our latitudes after specimens escaped from breeding farms.
