Marten damage: Which insurance really pays?
Martens are particularly active in the months of April to June and often cause damage to cars, especially cables and hoses. This damage can have serious consequences that are not always covered by motor vehicle liability insurance. Normal motor vehicle liability insurance is not sufficient for marten damage. Insurance protection usually only exists as part of partial or fully comprehensive insurance. Many insurance policies cover direct damage such as damage to cables or hoses. However, the indirect consequences, such as damage to the catalytic converter, engine or drive and axle joints, can be far more expensive.
Newer tariffs and powerful offers now generally offer protection in the event of damage caused by animal bites, without specifically checking whether the damage was caused by a marten or another animal. It is recommended that the insurance not only compensates for damage to the cables and hoses, but also to insulation mats and axle boots, as well as expensive consequential damage without maximum compensation limits. It can also make sense to have a vehicle insurance policy that also covers towing costs to the nearest workshop in the event of a breakdown. Such protection can be helpful in the event of marten damage or other unforeseen events.
