After the devastating explosion: Schorndorf's reconstruction begins!
On January 19, 2025, a devastating explosion occurred in a residential and commercial building at Gmünder Straße 95 in Schorndorf. The building burned down completely, blowing out walls and deforming the roof. These catastrophic events left not only a field of rubble, but also deep scars in the neighborhood, where broken windows and traumatized residents made the extent of the destruction clear. A total of seven people who lived or stayed overnight in the building were injured, some seriously.
The explosion, which was reported at 7:20 a.m. on Sunday morning, presented the city of Schorndorf with major challenges. Tanja Blankenhagen's physio practice, which only opened in October 2023, was completely destroyed. Blankenhagen found out about the fire from a patient and was quickly at the scene. The orthopedic Remstal practice, which was only open two weeks ago, was also severely affected by fire water and smoke damage. The doctors, Dr. Kai Charles Täubel and Matthias Dzieniszewski are planning to organize emergency operations in old practice rooms this week. Over four million euros were invested in her new practice.
Economic consequences for business owners
The explosion had serious economic consequences for five out of ten businesses in the building. Among the companies affected are the Karolidis flower shop and Café Melodie. The combination of fire and water damage could already drive the total damage into the millions, although the exact amount of damage cannot yet be quantified. Police and emergency services were deployed with helicopters and several patrols to manage the situation and initiate investigations.
Five months after the explosion, the demolition of the destroyed building on Gmünder Strasse is nearing completion. Herbert Krall, the homeowner, has announced that he will submit a building application to the city of Schorndorf in order to rebuild the building to the same extent. This is particularly important because insurance will only cover the costs if the reconstruction corresponds to the original condition. The plan calls for reconstructing the building to its former extent to provide perspective for affected business owners.
The events not only affected the immediate neighborhood, but also shook the confidence of business owners in the safety of their businesses. While the city is now taking the necessary steps to support the reconstruction, it remains to be seen how the affected entrepreneurs will cope with the economic burden. ZVW reports that charges against the alleged arsonists held responsible for the explosion are also pending. These legal steps could take some time and accompany the issue during the reconstruction phase.
The tragedies and challenges resulting from this explosion highlight the need for safety standards in residential and commercial buildings. The hopes for an early reconstruction and a return to normality now lie in the hands of the authorities and insurance companies.
