Compulsory insurance for Ukrainian vehicles in Germany: What financial experts say about it
According to a report by www.mdr.de,
The source, written by Lydia Jakobi for MDR AKTUELL, explains that every car on German roads needs liability insurance, including foreign vehicles. This also applies to cars from Ukraine. The police are currently carrying out random checks on the insurance coverage of Ukrainian vehicles. According to Sandra Schwarz, managing director of the Traffic Victim Assistance Association, only around 262 accidents involving uninsured Ukrainian vehicles have taken place on German territory since June 1, 2022, which corresponds to an average of less than one accident per day.
The introduction of compulsory civil liability insurance for Ukrainian vehicles has led to the conclusion of many insurance contracts. Ukrainian vehicles can receive either the Green Card or border insurance offered by German car insurers. There are also other options for Ukrainian vehicles to have insurance coverage in Germany.
The security and regulatory authorities, in particular the police, are responsible for checking insurance cover. In addition, Ukrainian vehicles must be registered in Germany no later than one year after entry, which also requires proof of insurance coverage.
In the event of an accident involving an uninsured Ukrainian vehicle, Sandra Schwarz advises the affected drivers to report the damage to the German Green Card Office. This office is responsible for handling claims involving insured Ukrainian vehicles in Germany. The traffic victim assistance would only step in if it is determined during the investigation that there is no responsible insurer.
The introduction of compulsory insurance for Ukrainian vehicles has therefore led to a larger number of insurance contracts being concluded. This also ensures that in the event of an accident involving a Ukrainian vehicle, those affected can be compensated and insurance providers can provide the necessary support.
