R+V Versicherung will reduce its carbon footprint by 20 percent by 2030
R+V Versicherung AG has exceeded its climate investment target by reducing its carbon footprint by more than 20 percent in the last four years. The company is now aiming for even more ambitious goals by 2030. With the long-term goal of making its investment portfolio climate-neutral by 2050, R+V has already achieved its first interim goal ahead of schedule. The greenhouse gas intensity of stocks and corporate bonds has already been reduced, which represents a success for R+V's efforts towards climate-neutral capital investments.
CFO Marc Michallet emphasizes the importance of this milestone for the company, saying it is a motivating validation of their efforts. R+V sets ambitious goals to minimize the impact of its investments on the climate, while continuing to generate a good return to meet its commitments to customers. With an investment volume of around 120 billion euros, R+V, as one of the largest insurance groups in Germany, can make an important contribution to a climate-neutral economy.
As the next interim goal, R+V plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from stocks and corporate bonds by a further 20 percent by 2030, which would mean a total reduction of 40 percent compared to the base year 2019. In addition, the company has committed to reducing the carbon footprint of its directly held properties by 25 percent by 2030. R+V joined the Net Zero Asset Owner Alliance (NZAOA) in 2023 to underline its climate goal. This initiative obliges well-known pension funds and insurers worldwide to make their investment portfolios climate-neutral by 2050.
With around 9 million customers, R+V Versicherung is one of the largest insurers in Germany and offers tailor-made insurance solutions as part of the Volksbanken Raiffeisenbanken cooperative financial group. In 2023, the R+V Group generated premium income of almost 20 billion euros and employed over 17,000 people. R+V's continued efforts to make its investments climate-neutral demonstrate its commitment to a sustainable future.
