Security for heat pumps: tips against theft and vandalism

Heat pumps are exposed to the weather and can be the target of theft or vandalism because they are installed outside of buildings. To avoid this, owners should choose a less visible position. Attaching it to the house wall or roof can also be an option, according to the Schleswig-Holstein consumer advice center.

However, the noise generated by the heat pump should be taken into account in order to minimize disruption to owners and neighbors. Heat pumps are often placed on a free-standing concrete foundation and screwed tightly to prevent theft.

It is recommended to use special breakaway nuts to further reduce the risk of theft. Additional measures such as a fence or a protective cage can make dismantling more difficult without restricting the functionality of the devices. Security can be further improved through a combination of alarm, lighting or GPS tracker.

Owners should also consider insurance to cover residual risks. Homeowners insurance can cover the heat pump if it is damaged or stolen, provided it is properly included in the policy. Other insurance options such as electronics insurance or construction insurance can provide additional protection, depending on individual needs.
