Skiing accident abroad: Correct insurance coverage is important
Before skiers and snowboarders hit the slopes, they should definitely check their insurance coverage. In the event of an accident in which a person is injured, high costs can be incurred. In Italy, private liability insurance has even been required by law since 2022. Anyone who travels on the Italian slopes without appropriate insurance coverage risks a fine of 150 euros, as mentioned by the General Association of the German Insurance Industry (GDV).
For their vacation in Italy, travelers should request proof of insurance from their insurer or broker in good time. The document must contain information about the insured persons, the insurer, the insured sum and be written in German and Italian. In order to avoid taking out additional insurance, it is advisable to always have proof of your own insurer in Italy to hand. Slope operators are obliged to offer guests who cannot prove insurance cover the opportunity to take out insurance.
In addition to private liability insurance, there are other insurance policies that ski vacationers should consider. For example, foreign health insurance can cover the difference in treatment costs abroad that are higher than in Germany. Statutory health insurance usually only covers costs such as helicopter use if there are medical reasons. If no other insurance provides coverage, private accident insurance in accordance with GDV can cover the costs of rescue, search and rescue measures after a skiing accident.
