Taxi controls in the Düren district: dozens of vehicles without insurance!
On the night of Friday, May 23rd to Saturday, May 24th, 2025, the authorities in the Düren district carried out extensive checks of taxis and rental cars. This measure, organized by the Düren traffic service, the specialist department of the Düren Road Traffic Office and the Aachen Weights and Measures Office, had the aim of increasing road safety for passengers. Various aspects such as the technical equipment regulations and the required permits for the vehicle drivers were checked. The vehicle drivers were also the focus of the checks to ensure that they had the necessary driving license to transport passengers, also known as a “P license” ( Federal Taxi Association ).
However, the checks led to several worrying discoveries. A first incident involved a taxi driver who tried to pick up a passenger whose vehicle did not have valid insurance cover. In this case, the vehicle's license plate was unsealed, the vehicle registration document was confiscated and further driving was prohibited. Another taxi from the same company, which was also operating without insurance, was immediately taken off the road.
Rental Car Violations
In addition, the control authorities discovered further violations in rental cars. A vehicle was found in Jülich without the required odometer and also without an exemption. Further travel was immediately prohibited. Another rental vehicle in front of the Düren train station did not have a calibratable odometer - irregularities were also found here and further travel was prohibited until calibration.
Further findings during the controls showed that two taxis with licenses for other communities tried to pick up passengers in Düren. In this context, administrative offense reports were drawn up.
Control balance and outlook
A total of 12 vehicles were checked during the checks, 4 of which had to be stopped immediately. Five other vehicles had other defects that were reported. The checks are part of an ongoing collaboration between the police and the Düren Road Traffic Office, which will continue in the future to ensure road safety.
The legal framework for the transport of passengers is clearly defined and, in addition to the normal driving license, also includes the driving license to transport passengers in accordance with Section 48 of the Driving License Ordinance. This is essential for driving ambulances, rental cars and other types of vehicles used in commercial traffic ( Federal Taxi Association ).
