Civil service despite psychotherapy?

The prospect of successful psychotherapy often brings relief, but problems can arise in some life situations - especially when becoming a civil servant or taking out insurance. A widespread rumor says that people cannot become civil servants after psychotherapy. Experts such as lawyer Susanne Tyczewski explain that civil service is usually only rejected if it is foreseeable that the potential civil servant will not be able to work until the end of his term of service. Under normal circumstances, potential officers don't even have to disclose their therapies.

Tougher rules apply to professions such as police, fire brigade and rescue services, as physical fitness also plays a major role here. Despite completing therapy in their youth, some young people report rejections in police training. In the event of a rejection, applicants have the opportunity to sue for employment, but must prove that the medical report was incorrect. This is usually difficult to achieve because the requirements are very high. However, most applicants are hired in these areas.

The effects of psychotherapy can also influence the purchase of certain insurance policies. For example, disclosing psychotherapy can cause problems when applying for disability insurance. It is recommended that you state the reason for therapy as precisely as possible to avoid misunderstandings. The statute of limitations plays a role here, as depending on the time frame, the therapy must be stated or not. In many cases it is still worth taking out occupational disability insurance to protect your own work.

Insurance such as term life insurance or private health insurance can also be problematic if psychotherapy has taken place within a certain period of time. A differentiated assessment by insurers can be crucial in such cases. Given the increased demand for psychotherapy, especially during the corona pandemic, experts hope that insurers will take a more differentiated look at mental illnesses in the future and evaluate individual cases more precisely.
