AfD survey high: Research in Görlitz pubs produces surprising results

Right-wing radicalism: AfD in East Germany – “The perceived threat is crucial”

In relation to the AfD's current poll high in East Germany, Julian Nejkow and Clemens Kießling carried out an unusual research project in various pubs in Görlitz. The choice of pubs as research sites was due to a key situation in which the atmosphere proved to be more relaxed and informal. The conversations with the bar patrons revealed interesting insights, particularly regarding the changes in people's attitudes and statements after consuming alcohol.

The individual interviews conducted revealed that mainly men were involved in the discussions, with people over 50 years of age in particular expressing a clear affinity for the former GDR era. The research project also highlighted the topics of work and family as central concerns in the everyday lives of bar patrons.

In evaluating the study, Clemens Kießling emphasized the relevance of political issues in people's lives, especially when political decisions affect their everyday lives. This connection between macrocosm and microcosm, especially in relation to events such as the Corona measures or migration, was reflected in the topics discussed during the pub conversations.

The “perceived threat” identified was a central theme as many people, despite personal well-being, felt that their well-being was threatened by external factors. The AfD appeared as a political alternative that promised security and stability in its microcosm. The discrepancy between the AfD's promises and their real feasibility became clear during the talks.

The importance of trust and communication was highlighted as a key factor for social change and crisis management. The need for transparent and understandable communication was emphasized, particularly when dealing with new challenges such as the climate crisis, in order to strengthen trust and reduce existing fears and uncertainties.

The bar conversations also revealed a tendency to express opinions without deeper knowledge, highlighting the need for humility and respect in communication. However, the willingness to acquire knowledge and change was partly impaired by past disappointments and social upheavals. The study thus illustrated the complexity and challenges of dealing with political and social changes in East Germany.
