Unemployment figures in Giessen fall in April

The unemployment figures in the Giessen agency district fell slightly again in April. The number of unemployed fell by 157 to a total of 18,730, corresponding to an unemployment rate of 4.9 percent. Compared to the previous year, 783 fewer people were registered as unemployed, with a rate of 4.8 percent in April 2023.

Michael Beck, chairman of the Giessen employment agency, assesses the development as positive, but is of the opinion that more economic stimulus is still needed. In April, 4,540 people found employment, which is 167 more than in the previous year. The increase in job additions compared to the same month last year is particularly encouraging, although this is not yet enough to bring about lasting positive changes in the labor market.

A total of 25,893 people were underemployed in March, an increase of 699 people compared to April 2023. The number of job notifications from employers fell uncharacteristically in April compared to the previous month. A total of 982 new jobs were reported, 76 fewer than in March but 23 more than last year. The number of jobs subject to social insurance contributions fell to 5,619 in April.

Furthermore, 10,410 men were reported as unemployed in the Giessen agency district in April, which corresponds to a decrease of 145 compared to the previous month. The rate for men was 5.2 percent. Among women, 8,320 were unemployed, 12 fewer than in the previous month. The rate remained unchanged at 4.7 percent. Overall, the number of unemployed young people and older unemployed people fell, which is a positive development.
