Railway renovation Frankfurt-Heidelberg: Now wait until 2030!
Deutsche Bahn has announced that it will postpone the renovation of the railway line between Frankfurt and Heidelberg. Instead of 2027 as originally planned, the general renovation is now only scheduled to begin in 2030. This delay is part of a broader plan that calls for a Germany-wide extension of the general renovation until 2035, which means a total postponement of four years. The railway announced this in a press release today.
In parallel, the schedule for other renovation projects remains unchanged until 2026. This includes, among other things, the Unkel-Wiesbaden route. The route between Fulda and Hanau will continue to be renovated in 2027. Renovations are also planned for the period after 2028 on the Bebra-Fulda routes in 2032 and Kassel-Friedberg in 2031.
Background to the general renovation
The general renovation aims to modernize heavily frequented and outdated route corridors and prepare them for digital expansion. Deutsche Bahn considers the already completed modernization of the Riedbahn between Frankfurt and Mannheim to be a success. Thanks to these measures, delays in long-distance and local transport were significantly reduced. The general renovation of the Riedbahn began last year and is seen as a model for future projects. hessenschau.de.

These strategic decisions are part of comprehensive planning that aims to sustainably improve rail connections in Germany and prepare them for future challenges such as digitalization.
