Rail traffic around Hanover: disruptions finally resolved!
Rail traffic in Lower Saxony has returned to normal after two disruptions were lifted. As the South German newspaper Reportedly, the disruptions involved a catenary line and a signal disruption, which significantly affected traffic around Hanover in particular. The problems led to diversions and delays of up to 90 minutes for many travelers.
The overhead line fault between Wunstorf and Haste was repaired around 4 p.m. on Wednesday, allowing trains between Hanover and Hamm to run again according to plan. Previously, some trains had to be rerouted, while stops in Bünde, Minden, Bad Oeynhausen, Herford, Bielefeld and Gütersloh had to be eliminated NDR additionally communicated.
Delays on main routes
In addition, a signal repair between Hanover and Bremen caused delays in long-distance traffic of around 30 to 60 minutes. The signal glitch had been active since Tuesday and was resolved after 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Many long-distance trains were delayed during this time, but were now able to run according to schedule again.
Another incident that caused additional problems was a power outage in the Hamburg signal box on Wednesday morning. This brought all train traffic to the south to a standstill and also led to delays and canceled trains in Hanover. However, the problem was resolved after an hour.
Long-term construction work and modernizations
In the coming period, construction work at Hanover Central Station will also lead to further restrictions. Travelers should therefore always find out about their connections before starting their journey. General renovations of important routes are planned from August 2025. The line will remain closed during these nine months, which will have a significant impact on rail traffic in the region.
Renovation work is also planned in northern Germany, which is scheduled to begin in the early 2030s. These expansions as part of climate policy aim to put more traffic on the rails and sustainably improve rail connections. The train station in Hanover will be modernized this spring, which will also result in the tracks being closed.
Overall, the situation for rail travelers in Lower Saxony has now stabilized after the disruptions, but they should prepare for future changes and delays.
