Most popular country for foreign workers: Germany in fifth place
Germany remains a popular work location for foreign workers, according to a recent study. With fifth place in the ranking of the most attractive work locations, Germany is the first non-English-speaking country, directly behind the USA, Canada and Great Britain. The study, published by Boston Consulting Group, Stepstone and The Network, is based on surveys of 150,000 employees from 188 countries.
According to the results of the survey, around 60 percent of those surveyed were generally willing to move abroad for a job, although Germany has lost some of its attractiveness compared to other countries. In 2018, Germany took second place in the popularity rankings. Interestingly, workers in Germany themselves are comparatively less mobile. Only seven percent of respondents in this country, including immigrants, are looking for a job abroad, with Switzerland and Austria cited as preferred destinations.
The willingness to migrate for work is significantly higher in other countries, especially in African countries like Ghana and countries like India and Turkey. Highly qualified employees also show a high willingness to move abroad. When selecting the target country, the attractiveness of the job offer plays a crucial role. Companies that offer employees from abroad attractive working conditions and organizational support have a clear advantage in the competition for international skilled workers. This also includes simplifying bureaucratic processes such as applying for work permits, which, according to the study, are often still perceived as laborious in Germany.
