Brussels meeting: IHK delegation fights for strong industrial prices!

The European Union's industrial and energy policy is currently in focus as the EU exerts increasing influence on the industry's framework conditions. A delegation from the Industry, Energy and Environment Committee of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) traveled to Brussels to present their industrial policy demands. Led by Dietmar Hemsath, Managing Director of Georgsmarienhütte GmbH, the event was held under the motto “#FutureEnergy – Energy. Change. Opportunities”.

A central concern of the delegation is maintaining Europe's industrial strength by ensuring stable and internationally competitive energy prices. Discussions took place in Brussels with high-ranking representatives from politics, associations and business, including Michael Hager, head of cabinet of the EU Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Productivity, and Jens Gieseke, Member of the European Parliament.

Important demands

The IHK delegation put forward several key demands, including:

Anke Schweda, division manager of the IHK, emphasized the need to promote the competitiveness and innovative strength of companies, thereby signaling that interest representation also takes place at the European level.

European Commission initiatives

In addition to the delegation trip, the European Commission presented key initiatives to strengthen Europe as a business location, which are based on the Competitiveness Compass. The “Clean Industrial Deal” forms the core of these initiatives and includes six areas of action:

  1. Bezahlbare Energie
  2. Leitmärkte
  3. Finanzierung
  4. Kreislaufwirtschaft und Zugang zu Rohstoffen
  5. Globale Märkte und internationale Partnerschaften
  6. Kompetenzen

These measures aim to ensure the successful transformation and decarbonization of the European economy and industry. The aim is for European industry to become an international leader in the development and production of clean technologies.

The Commission's initiatives, which include steps to stabilize and reduce energy prices, are very important. For example, 56 GW of new solar capacity and 16 GW of wind capacity were installed in 2023. Compared to pre-crisis levels, gas demand has fallen by 18 percent.

Government subsidies for network fees are also possible to reduce the burden on companies. Germany has already taken measures to reduce electricity taxes for companies. The Commission has also presented two omnibus packages to reduce bureaucracy, which are intended to relieve companies and citizens of bureaucratic burdens.

The coming weeks and months will be crucial for the implementation of these proposals under the Polish Presidency. They will be examined in detail and advised in collaboration with the new federal government and the EU Commission.
