CO2 tax 2024: Fuel prices in Austria continue to rise

According to a report by www.vol.at,

The CO2 tax will be increased at the turn of the year - this means that prices at Austria's gas stations will continue to rise in January. There could still be traffic jams at gas stations towards the end of the year.

Diesel and gasoline are becoming more expensive

In 2023, the increase in the CO2 price was less than originally planned by law due to the sharp rise in energy prices. The increase will now come on January 1, 2024: The price will rise as planned from 32.5 to 45 euros per ton.

Of course, this increase also has an effect when refueling. From January 1, 2024, a liter of diesel will be 3.7 cents more expensive, and a liter of gasoline will cost 3.4 cents more, calculated ARBÖ President Peter Rezar. For average diesel drivers, an additional burden of 108 euros is expected annually and petrol drivers must expect an additional annual burden of around 98 euros.

ARBÖ President criticizes higher taxes

Rezar criticizes that the climate bonus, which is intended to compensate for CO2 pricing, is far from enough to offset the additional costs. “In the current situation in Austria with price increases and still high inflation, higher taxes are the wrong economic policy,” said the ARBÖ President.

Climate bonus as compensation

The amount of the 2024 climate bonus depends on CO2 pricing and will be determined during the first half of 2024. The bonus itself will then be paid out to around 8.5 million people from autumn 2024. In 2023 it was 110, 150, 185 or 220 euros, depending on where you live.

In 2025 it will be even more expensive

In 2025, prices at the pump will rise even further, as the price of CO2 emissions will then be increased to 55 euros per ton. The price of diesel will rise by a further 3.0 cents to 16.5 cents per liter and the price of petrol will rise by 2.7 cents to 15.0 cents per liter.

Tip: fill up your tank before the new year

In order to save at least some money, the ARBÖ advises Austrians to fill up their own car with gas before January 1, 2024. However, longer waiting times at the gas stations have to be accepted, as there could still be a rush at the gas stations on New Year's Eve.
