German car manufacturers warn of punitive tariffs on Chinese electric cars
German car manufacturers have spoken out against possible punitive tariffs on the import of electric cars from China. The automotive industry association emphasizes the need for dialogue between the parties involved. It is pointed out that additional tariffs would not solve the challenges facing the European and German automotive industries, but on the contrary could endanger the transformation towards electromobility and digitalization.
The EU Commission has been examining since last autumn whether Chinese electric cars receive illegal subsidies. According to the Commission, Chinese models are generally around 20 percent cheaper than vehicles manufactured in the EU. A possible anti-subsidy investigation could lead to the imposition of punitive tariffs, with a decision expected by early June.
It is noted that German car manufacturers sell 30 to 40 percent of their vehicles on the Chinese market. In the event of punitive tariffs from the European Union, German manufacturers could be the first target of Chinese countermeasures. This highlights the importance of a diplomatic solution to avoid potential trade conflicts and protect the interests of both sides.
