Digital ranking: Bremen in 9th place nationwide

In the Bitkom state index, Bremen ranks ninth out of a total of 16 federal states. Hamburg takes the top spot. However, Bremen stands out as one of the top 3 locations in the “Digital Economy” category.

The overall rating of digitalization in Bremen is 59.1 out of 100 possible points, which is a mediocre result compared to other countries. Bremen performs particularly poorly in the areas of “Digital Society” and “Digital Administration”, where it takes second to last and last place respectively. This ranking is mainly due to the lack of computer science classes from grade 5 onwards and the limited online administration services.

The positive aspect can be seen in the “Digital Economy” category, in which Bremen ranks third among all federal states. This is due to the high number of IT trainees and students as well as the above-average proportion of companies in the information technology and telecommunications sectors.

Hamburg leads the ranking with 73.5 points, followed by Berlin and Bavaria. The three eastern German states of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia bring up the rear. When it comes to digitalization, city-states and densely populated regions tend to perform better. The expansion of fiber optic networks and 5G coverage are easier to implement here. Nevertheless, Lower Saxony shows that expansion can also be successful in regional states.

The Bitkom digital ranking includes data from the areas of digital economy, digital infrastructure, digital society as well as governance and digital administration. 26 indicators such as 5G expansion and fiber optic coverage were examined. The assessment is based on representative surveys with over 5,600 citizens, official statistics and third-party studies from all 16 state governments.
