Draghi warns: Europe's illusion is bursting - time for unity!
Mario Draghi, former President of the European Central Bank and Prime Minister of Italy, delivered a powerful speech today at the “Meeting for Friendship among Peoples” in Rimini. He criticized the geopolitical challenges facing the European Union. Draghi called on the EU states to defend the values of the union and counteract growing public skepticism. The world is increasingly moving away from multilateral rules, while geoeconomics is becoming more important, said Draghi.
In his address, he called for the EU to adapt to current geopolitical realities and called for greater integration in the internal market and in the technology sector in order to strengthen Europe's competitiveness. The need for unified EU action became clear in order to actively shape the future.
Illusions and reality
Draghi also made it clear that the EU had long believed that its economic size, with 450 million consumers, gave it geopolitical influence. However, he recalled that 2023 will go down in history as the year in which this illusion shattered. Draghi criticized European inaction on the crises in Ukraine and Gaza as well as the challenges posed by American customs policy. He called on the EU to promote integration and develop a common debt policy in order to realize large pan-European projects.
The 77-year-old Draghi, who was president of the ECB from 2011 to 2019 and prime minister of Italy from February 2021 to October 2022, expressed concern about the current situation in Europe. In his view, it would be crucial for EU member states to work together decisively to respond to pressing geopolitical challenges.
With his words, Draghi called for European unity and determination and made clear the need not only to defend the EU's values, but also to actively live them. The coming years will show whether the EU has learned from the mistakes of the past and is able to effectively face the new challenges. How Time and Rai News report, it remains to be seen whether Draghi's appeal will be heard and what steps the EU will take in response to his demands.
