EasyJet pays for detecting hand luggage that is too large!

The strict hand luggage rules at EasyJet not only cause dissatisfaction among passengers, but also an internal incentive system among employees. Airport staff in the UK are reportedly being rewarded with bonuses for identifying oversized carry-on luggage, as recently documented in internal emails. This practice is part of the EasyJet Gate Bag Revenue Incentive program, which aims to strictly enforce baggage policy compliance.

At Birmingham, Bristol, Glasgow, London Gatwick, Manchester and Newcastle airports, Swissport employees receive 1.20 pounds (the equivalent of around 1.39 euros) for each oversized piece of luggage they catch at the gate. After taxes, employees are left with an average of one pound per piece of luggage found, highlighting increasing pressure to enforce the rules.

Carry-on baggage regulations and fees

In general, passengers are allowed to take a small bag on board free of charge, which must be stowed under the seat in front. Larger hand luggage that exceeds the specified dimensions will incur a cost depending on the country: in the UK, at least £5.99 for booking in advance, while if discovered at the gate there is a hefty fee of £48. In Germany the costs can even be up to 58 euros. This means that passengers are well advised to adhere to the regulations to avoid additional costs.

In addition, there are proposals from the European Parliament regarding uniform hand luggage dimensions. These should stipulate a size of 40 × 30 × 15 cm for personal luggage and up to 7 kg for hand luggage. As a result, Ryanair has already adjusted its on-board baggage dimensions.

Baggage booking options

Passengers have the option to choose a fare that includes one large piece of hand luggage when booking a flight on the EasyJet website. This can also be added separately to the booking, which entitles you to fast boarding. To make the most of carry-on baggage availability and prices, it is recommended that you add seats or luggage when booking, as this offers the greatest possible flexibility.

EasyJet Plus members have the advantage of being allowed to take a larger piece of luggage on board in addition to a small piece of hand luggage if this is added. Passengers who have not selected a large hand luggage tariff can also take a large piece of hand luggage with them, depending on availability. Managing flight and hand luggage options is easy either when booking or via the EasyJet app.

In summary, the incentive system for checking hand luggage is a sign of the strict practice of low-cost airlines. While passengers must pay close attention to hand luggage regulations, the company strives to ensure customer satisfaction through clear options and adjustments in the booking.
