Retail sales in Germany decline in February 2024
Retail companies in Germany recorded a decline in sales in February 2024 compared to the previous month. According to the preliminary results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), real sales fell by 1.9% after calendar and season adjustment, while nominal sales, not adjusted for price, fell by 1.8%.
Compared to February 2023, retail recorded a real sales decline of 2.7% and a nominal decline of 0.4%. This difference between the nominal and real results reflects the increased retail price level.
In particular, food retail sales showed a declining trend in February 2024. After calendar and seasonally adjusted real sales fell by 1.7% and nominal sales fell by 2.0% compared to the previous month. Compared to the same month of February 2023, this sector recorded a decrease in real sales of 2.0%, while nominal sales increased by 0.7%.
