The first trams are rolling again on Wuhlheide – relief for commuters!
The first trams have been running again on the Wuhlheide tram route since today, May 29, 2025. The Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) announced that the start went smoothly. A shuttle service on line M17 will be set up every 10 minutes between Blockdammweg and Schöneweide S-Bahn station. However, diversions for the remaining tram lines will remain in place, while the previously established bus replacement service will be discontinued. From Saturday, all lines in this area should run regularly again.
This transition period is used to adapt information systems, service schedules and timetables to ensure stable operations. Before traffic was reopened, the tracks were checked and the overhead line was rebuilt and connected. Pedestrians and cyclists can also cross from Treskowallee onto Edisonstrasse again. At the intersection, which currently operates without traffic lights, security guards regulate tram operations as well as pedestrian and bicycle traffic. Ambulances, police and fire departments also have the opportunity to pass through the area in the direction of Treskowallee/Edisonstrasse.
Condition of the Wuhlheide Bridge
The tram route was closed for a long time due to the Wuhlheide Bridge being in danger of collapsing. During testing, numerous cracks were discovered along the entire length of the bridge, which ultimately led to its demolition. This started last Saturday. The complete closure of the bridge led to significant traffic disruptions on both road and rail.
The entire construction site for demolishing the bridge should be completed by June 27th at the latest. Facilitation for vehicle traffic is planned until June 6, 2025, although this depends on construction progress and weather conditions. Currently, six of nine construction sites have already been demolished.
Planned night work
In addition to the ongoing work, residents are informed that noise-intensive night work will take place based on the noise protection regulations. These are planned for the period from May 26, 2025, 8:00 p.m. to May 29, 2025, 7:00 a.m., followed by further work from June 2, 2025, 8:00 p.m. to June 4, 2025, 7:00 a.m.
The work includes the crushing and separation of broken reinforced concrete as well as construction logistics measures and work on the tram overhead line.
The expected noise pollution can reach levels of up to 84 dB(A), with short-term maximum levels of up to 87 dB(A). Information letters will be distributed to affected residents indicating that if the assessment level is 65 dB(A) or more and peak levels are above 75 dB(A), an offer for a replacement bedroom will be made. These offers take the form of a flat-rate reimbursement of costs.
Affected buildings and streets include:
- An der Wuhlheide 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20
- Roedernstraße 8-14b, 15-20
- Zeppelinstraße 1-12, 14, 16, 34, 34a
- Edisonstraße 29-39
- Helmholtzstraße 1-11
- Fritz-Kirsch-Zeile 12-35
- Fuststraße 12-50
The entire situation surrounding the Wuhlheide Bridge shows the challenges that exist in Berlin's transport infrastructure and the measures taken by the authorities to address them. The BVG and the city administration are striving to complete the construction site as quickly as possible and to minimize the inconvenience for residents and commuters.
